Most Health Insurers pay out literally millions each month in claims. (The total paid by all private Health insurers in NZ for 2019 was 1.3 billion) That’s approx. 10.8 million dollars each month. Most of it made up of smaller individual claims.
However NIB sent us the following recently :
TOP 5 NIB Claims for AUGUST
Spine Surgery $98,810
Coronary Bypass Operation $78,780
Spine surgery $77,530
Aortic (heart) Valve Replacement $72,860
Coronary Bypass Surgery $72,850
Southern cross is the largest Health Insurer in NZ. It would be fair to assume that Southern Cross has paid out even more large single amounts for August.
You might be thinking “Why weren’t these procedures carried out through the public health system?”
Perhaps the following sheds some light.
“An average of 1063 people per month have been waiting longer than the required timeframe for their first specialist assessment through the public health system” (NIB Information from 2016).
That’s the big plus with Health Insurance. You don’t have to go on a waiting list!
